On August 15th, the whole of India gets into full throttle to celebrate one of the most magnificent and emotional events in the history of India: Independence Day. It is the day of relief from the so-called 'British Raj' and the birth of our 'great' nation as a sovereign, democratic republic. That is the day to remember and hence commemorate that there were so many freedom fighters who gave their lives for our freedom, by honoring their memory and rejoicing in the exuberance and richness of this great country we belong to.
The Glorious Journey to Freedom
Independence Day stands for much more than a date on the calendar. It is an evocative reminder of many struggles and sacrifices made by the relentless spirit of freedom fighters who envisioned free India. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and Bhagat Singh are some among so many who really toiled non-stop to free the country from colonial rule. Their efforts, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice were the stepping stone towards the liberty and democracy we so very much enjoy at the present moment.
Their bravery and hard struggles remind us of the lesson of unity, patriotism, and worth of our freedom. Let this Independence Day be a reverent tribute to their memory by living with a sense of patriotism in our daily life.
India achieved freedom from British rule after a long and multidimensional struggle of non-violent resistance, political negotiations, and at times, armed struggle. The outline of major events and movements which finally led to freedom for India was as follows:
1. Early Struggles and Reforms (1857-1900s)
First War of Independence (1857): Commonly regarded as the 'First Great Revolt of Independence', this was the beginning of organized resistance against British rule.
Indian National Congress, 1885: The Congress came into being as an agitation vehicle for greater autonomy and reforms within the framework provided by the British. It was to soon become the pivot of nationalist activities.
2. Growth of Nationalism and Non-Violent Movements (1900s-1930s)
Partition of Bengal, 1905, and its Revocation, 1911: The British policy of dividing Bengal with the intention of weakening nationalist sentiment received such strong opposition that it had to be revoked.
Gandhian Era: 1920s-1940s: Mahatma Gandhi was leading the Indian National Congress to pursue a non-violent resistance strategy. Satyagraha and civil disobedience were important movements involved. One of them was the Non-Cooperation Movement, 1920-22. This was a mass movement against the rule of the British, wherein non-violence was the basic weapon.
Salt March (1930): A 240-mile march to the Arabian Sea, led by Gandhi, protesting the British monopoly on salt.
Quit India Movement (1942): A mass protest to put an end to British rule that later turned into widespread civil disobedience with subsequent arrests.
3. Path to Independence (1940s)
A double impact of the Second World War (1939-45) was economic and political strain on Britain, due to the Quit India Movement, which made them further expedite the need for the march towards independence.
The 1945 British general election returned a Labour government more amenable to Indian aspirations. Further rounds of negotiations between British authorities, Indian leaders such as Nehru and Gandhi, and the Muslim League led into discussions regarding the future of India.
4. Independence and Partition, 1947
Mountbatten Plan, 1947: The last British Viceroy of India, Lord Louis Mountbatten, put forward a plan for partition, which was implemented and two nations were formed: India and Pakistan.
Independence Day (15 August 1947): India became independent from British rule, and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India. The partition was followed by extensive communal Violence and mass migrations.
